Yukon Solitaire: open packs, no stock

Yukon sits between Klondike and FreeCell on the configuration map. You still build Ace→King foundations and alternating-colour columns, but there is no stock, and you may move any face-up pack — not only a fully built run. Compared with Klondike, more cards start face-up; compared with FreeCell, some cards stay hidden. For how that sits on the four rule axes, see Which solitaire to play.

Rules of Yukon

The layout. One standard 52-card deck. Seven columns in a staircase deal, with extra cards face-up beyond the usual Klondike pattern — mixed visibility: some face-down, many face-up from the start. There is no stock and no waste.

Foundations. Four, built up by suit from ace to king. Moving all fifty-two cards to the foundations wins.

Columns. Build down in rank and alternate in colour. You may pick up any face-up card together with everything on top of it, even when that pack is not a correctly built run, and place it on a card one rank higher of the opposite colour.

Empty columns. An empty column takes a king — or a pack headed by a king — and nothing else.

Strategy

  1. Expose face-down cards. Every buried card is unknown information. Moves that turn one over usually beat tidy rearrangements.
  2. Use loose packs. Because any face-up pack moves, you can dig under a badly ordered stack without waiting for a perfect run — plan where the loose cards will land.
  3. Empty a column for the right king. Empties are scarce and king-only, as in Klondike. Do not open one without a king you want to build on.
  4. Send aces and twos home early. Low cards on the foundation free the table; higher cards may still be needed as landing spots.
  5. Read the open cards before the first move. Yukon shows more than Klondike at the start; the whole open surface is available for planning.

Frequently asked questions

How is Yukon different from Klondike? No stock, and you may move any face-up pack onto an alternating-colour build — not only a fully sequenced run. The deal also shows more cards face-up from the start.

Can you move a disordered pack in Yukon? Yes. Any face-up card plus the cards on top of it may move together, as long as the landing spot is one rank higher and the opposite colour.

What goes in an empty Yukon column? A king only (or a pack headed by a king).

Is Yukon in Decks? Yes — see the App Store listing from the home page. No ads, no account, offline play; free to download with a daily game limit without Premium.
